Suddenly the series opens up to a far wider audience cha-ching, Microsoft! Anyhow, back to the present and really, what's to say? Other than all the history stuff, there's nothing in Flight Sim that you're not expecting. Better graphics of course they're really quite lovely now. A totally revamped weather system that's as real as anything we've seen to date. The auto-gen scenery engine works with the respective terrains much better than before meaning cities now actually look like proper cities when you fly over them.

The ATC has had a complete upgrade and despite one or two minor bugs involving aircraft disappearing from runways and the like, makes the skies around you feel as busy and alive as they used to in the old Flight Unlimited series the previous standard bearer. Virtual cockpits are also now included in every plane in the box, which helps the flight experience immensely. Fundamentally it comes down to whether you like flying planes for the sake of flying planes or not.

There's no reason not to like Flight Sim other than for the subject matter. Technically it's a near flawless product, and certainly the best civil flight sim on the market. The history aspect adds a new dimension to the proceedings and is as good a reason as any to make you rush out and buy it - a move lean highly recommend. Not that the fans won't already be installing it anyway. Must be nice to have a guaranteed audience like that. There is no shortage of these games, but this one here stands out for many reasons and is fun if you are an aviation enthusiast or someone like me who just likes to mess around with cool-looking planes!

The game was released as part of the celebrations of the th anniversary of the Wright Brothers and you can even fly that plane in this game!

It features many different kinds of aircraft from years of flight which is really cool. Even cooler is that each of the planes handles differently. I am no flight expert, but I found this to be cool and trying to fly the Wright Brothers plane and go on their first flight was not only really awesome but very challenging too.

The number of times I smashed that thing into the ground after just a few seconds was insane, but I mean that in a good way. At the time this was a very graphically impressive game and I think it holds up pretty darn well to this day, to be honest with you.

If you want to learn how to fly a plane in real life then I think this would be a good place to start! The number of things you have to do and keep an eye on is insane, but part of the challenge. The game offers flying lessons which I found pretty easy to understand and they are also really handy in that they are basically the tutorial of the game. Ok so I played the game just using the keyboard and eventually I got the hang of it, but the word simulator is in the name of Microsoft Flight Simulator Century of Flight for a very good reason.

This is a game that has a lot going on. While I got into it with the keyboard just fine. I have heard that you can get a very expensive flight stick which makes the experience even better. Being the cheapskate, I am no way I am buying a flight stick just for a handful of games! You can take flying trips all over the world which is really cool. There are various challenges to complete such as certain maneuvers like flying over a bridge for example.

There are weather effects that you have to take into consideration too which are incredibly well done. This makes life so much simpler for you, and can really help speed up the process and ensure that you can log in and start playing as quickly as possible. Save yourself from being bored on the train or at home again thanks to not having the disk with this excellent no-CD patch for FS Adam McEnroe is a flight sim enthusiast who has been simming since the days of FS Adam writes all of the download section editorials after testing each of the files.

Most of the freeware add-on aircraft and scenery packages in our file library come with easy installation instructions which you can read above in the file description. Flight Simulator 9.

The program included an improved weather engine, that provided true three-dimensional clouds and true localized weather conditions for the first time. Other enhancements from the previous version included better ATC communications, GPS equipment, interactive virtual cockpits, and more variety in autogen such as barns, street lights, silos, etc.

A service update 9. At the time, this led Edge to declare it the country's 19th-best-selling computer game, and best-selling Microsoft Flight Simulator title, released since January No one would blame you for worrying about how Microsoft would handle the latest iteration of Flight Simulator. The first cause for concern is that the last version, Flight Simulator , was so good.

It improved the series by leaps and bounds in terms of creativity, technology, and accessibility. It's a tough act to follow. The second cause for concern is that Microsoft doesn't have any competition anymore. So not only is there not a lot of room for Flight Simulator to improve, but there doesn't seem to be much motive to improve. Fortunately, no one told Microsoft. It has blithely improved an already great sim by giving it a new angle, bringing in some really sweet technological improvements, and making it even more accessible.

You can tell the new creative angle by the subtitle, A Century of Flight. As a hundred-year commemoration of the Wright brothers' first successful powered flight at Kitty Hawk, Flight Simulator re-creates significant events in the history of aviation.

On one hand, this lends it a great time-bending twist, much like Papyrus was able to do with its masterpiece racing sim, Grand Prix Legends. Rather than throwing in a bunch of shiny new toys, the franchise takes a thoughtful look backwards and discovers something refreshingly unique. On the other hand, a lot of the significant events in the history of aviation just aren't that exciting.

Trying to keep the Wright flyer aloft for its historical 12 seconds is entertaining for all of about, say, 36 seconds. It's no wonder the Wright brothers trashed that frustrating thing after a few flights. Most of Flight Simulator 's other historical events were long-distance records in hard-to-fly aircraft. Part of the problem is that although you can accelerate time, you can't put many of these primitive aircraft on any sort of autopilot. This changes as you progress to later planes, like the DC-3 that lets you lock-on a heading.

But I can't imagine anyone wanting to re-create Lindbergh's hour transatlantic flight in a plane that didn't even have a proper windshield Lindbergh sat behind the fuel tank and could only see by looking out the sides of the plane or by opening a tiny periscope. Not that there was much to see, since most of the flight was apparently spent over an expanse of hardware-accelerated water effects.
